The 99% Reality
We often think humans are city-dwellers who sit in chairs. But that is a brand new experiment. For 99% of human history, we were nomads. Understanding this helps us forgive our bodies when they feel restless—they are just waiting for the hike to start.
The Survival Hardware
Why do we love donuts so much? On the ancient savanna, calories were rare. If you found a fruit tree (sugar) or an animal (fat), your brain released a chemical reward to say 'Eat this now!' Today, we are surrounded by food, but our brains are still running that ancient software. We are not greedy; we are just biologically optimized for a world where food was hard to find.
Portable Lives
Because we were always moving, we could not hoard things. We owned only what we could carry on our backs. This meant our 'wealth' was not in stuff, but in our skills and our relationships. If you couldn't carry it, you didn't own it. This deep history reminds us why experiences often make us happier than objects—we were built to travel light.
Unit 2 The Campfire 9 questions

We tend to think of technology as silicon chips and touchscreens. But the most important piece of technology humans ever invented was the campfire. It was the first 'external stomach.' By cooking our food, we pre-digested it, unlocking massive amounts of calories that used to be wasted. This extra energy went straight to our heads, allowing us to afford the massive, expensive brain that makes us human.

The External Stomach
Raw food is hard to digest. A chimp spends up to six hours a day just chewing. When humans tamed fire, we learned to cook. Cooking breaks down tough fibers and kills bacteria. It effectively does the hard work of digestion outside the body. This allowed us to spend less time chewing and more time thinking, talking, and inventing.
The Expensive Brain
Your brain is only 2% of your body weight, but it burns 20% of your energy. It is a biological luxury item. Without the calorie boost from cooked food, we could never have afforded to keep the lights on in such a powerful machine. Fire didn't just keep us warm; it literally fueled our intelligence.
The Social Hearth
Fire also changed our schedule. Before fire, when the sun went down, life stopped. With fire, we had light and warmth after dark. We sat around the flames, told stories, and bonded. This 'campfire time' is likely where human language, culture, and mythology were born. It was the original social network.
Unit 3 The San People 8 questions

To understand the original 'human operating system,' we must look at the San people of Southern Africa. They carry the oldest genetic markers on Earth, representing a direct line to our ancestors. By studying their culture—which values sharing, equality, and low conflict—we get a glimpse of how humans lived for 99% of history before we invented kings, money, and fences. They are the baseline from which we all evolved.

The Oldest Culture
The San people (often called Bushmen) have lived in the Kalahari Desert for at least 20,000 years. Their DNA proves they are the oldest continuous population of humans. They are not 'primitive'; they are experts at survival in a harsh environment, using skills and social rules that kept humanity alive through the Ice Ages. They represent the 'root directory' of the human species.
Insulting the Meat
When a San hunter kills a big antelope, he does not brag. In fact, the tribe mocks the meat, saying it is 'thin' or 'sickly.' This is a brilliant social technology called 'Insulting the Meat.' Its purpose is to keep the hunter humble. It prevents anyone from feeling superior or trying to become a 'chief.' It is a deliberate tool to maintain equality and prevent the pyramid of power from forming.
Tracking as Science
San hunters are the original scientists. They track animals by observing data (footprints, bent grass), forming a hypothesis ('The kudu went this way 2 hours ago'), and testing it. This process of deduction is the exact same cognitive software we use today for physics or coding. We didn't invent logic in a lab; we invented it on the hunt.
Unit 4 The Dunbar Number: Tribal Limits Core8 questions

Your brain has a contacts list, and it is smaller than you think. British anthropologist Robin Dunbar discovered that humans can only maintain about 150 true relationships. Beyond that, people become 'blurs.' In this unit, we explore the 'Dunbar Number.' The Biological Limit
Look at primates. The bigger the brain, the bigger the tribe. For humans, that math stops at about 150. This is the maximum number of people you can trust personally. You can know of more people (like celebrities), but you cannot know their hearts. This is why a village feels different than a city. In a village, trust is personal; in a city, it must be manufactured.
Crossing the Gap
So how do we live in New York or Tokyo? We cheated biology. We invented 'Shared Fictions.' I don't know the bus driver, but I trust the uniform. I don't know the shopkeeper, but I trust the money. These abstract symbols allowed us to expand our circle from 150 to 8 billion. We replaced 'friendship' with 'rules' so we could cooperate without killing each other.
The Social Media Trap
Your phone says you have 1,000 friends. Your brain disagrees. Biologically, we are not designed to care about the opinions of thousands of people at once. This mismatch creates anxiety. We are trying to process a global village with a brain built for a small campsite. We are socially exhausted because we are over-drawing our biological budget.

The Stone Tablet
Before writing, the law was just 'whatever the King feels like today.' If the King was angry, you were guilty. If he was happy, you were innocent. This was terrifying. Humans fixed this by carving the rules into stone (like the Code of Hammurabi). Writing the law down made it 'Objective.' It meant the rules were the same on Tuesday as they were on Monday, and importantly, they applied to the King, too.
The Great Deal
Why do we obey laws that tell us what to do? Because we signed a silent contract. Philosophers call this the 'Social Contract.' In the wild, you have total freedom—you can do anything, but anyone can hurt you. In a society, you trade a little bit of that freedom (you can't drive 100 mph) in exchange for safety (no one crashes into you). We give up 'freedom' to gain 'security.'
The Blindfold
You have seen statues of Lady Justice holding a scale. Have you noticed she is wearing a blindfold? This is not because she is ignoring the crime; it is because she is ignoring the person. A good law acts like a machine. It shouldn't care if you are rich, poor, famous, or the King's cousin. If the input is the same (the crime), the output must be the same (the punishment).
Unit 2 The Wallet: Taxes & Public Goods Core8 questions

Nobody likes paying bills. But imagine if you had to build your own road every time you wanted to drive to the store, or hire your own private firefighter every time you smelled smoke. That world would be expensive, slow, and dangerous. In this unit, we look at 'The Public Wallet.' The Potluck Dinner
Think of a potluck dinner. If everyone brings one dish, everyone gets a feast. If nobody brings anything, everyone goes hungry. Taxes are the potluck of civilization. We all put a little bit of money into a giant bucket (the Treasury). This bucket pays for 'Public Goods'—things that everyone uses but no one person owns, like clean air, streetlights, and sewers. It is the price of admission to a modern society.
The Free Rider
The system works great until someone tries to cheat. A 'Free Rider' is someone who eats at the potluck but didn't bring any food. If you don't pay your taxes but still drive on the roads and call the police, you are a Free Rider. If too many people do this, the bucket runs empty, the roads crack, and the fire trucks stop running. This is why tax evasion is considered a crime against your neighbors, not just the government.
The Invisible Subscription
You pay for Netflix to watch movies. You pay for Spotify to listen to music. Taxes are just a subscription to 'Civilization Premium.' This subscription includes features you don't think about until they are gone: trash collection, safe food inspection, and the legal system. It is the most expensive subscription you have, but it is also the only one that keeps the lights on for the entire country.
Unit 3 The Vote: Democracy Core8 questions

For most of human history, the person in charge was simply the person with the biggest sword. If you didn't like the rules, you had no choice. Then, humans had a dangerous, radical idea: what if the people were the boss? In this unit, we explore Democracy. It is the only system of government where you can fire the leader without starting a war. We will learn why it is loud, messy, and slow—and why those are actually good things.

The Giant Shift
There is a huge difference between being a 'Subject' and being a 'Citizen.' In a kingdom, you are a Subject—the King owns the land, and you are just allowed to live there. In a Democracy, you are a Citizen—you own the country. The government is not your master; it is your employee. This shift changed everything. It meant that power didn't come from the sky or a bloodline; it came from the consent of the ordinary people.
The Filter
Imagine if 300 million people tried to drive the same car. It would crash instantly. Direct Democracy (where everyone votes on everything) only works for very small groups. For big countries, we use 'Representative Democracy.' We hire people to go to the capital, read the boring laws, and vote on our behalf. It is a filter that turns the noise of millions into a single decision.
The Peaceful Exit
The most magical part of democracy isn't winning; it is losing. For thousands of years, the only way to change a leader was to kill them. Democracy invented a miracle: The Peaceful Transfer of Power. When a leader loses an election, they don't call the army. They pack their bags and go home. This simple act—walking away without a fight—is the rarest achievement in political history.

Randomness as Fairness
Why random people? Because experts and judges can be bribed or biased. It is easy to bribe one judge that everyone knows. It is very hard to bribe 12 strangers who didn't know they were going to be chosen until yesterday. Randomness disrupts corruption. It ensures that the person judging you is a 'peer'—someone like you—rather than a government agent.
The Wisdom of the Crowd
If you ask one person to guess the number of jellybeans in a jar, they will be wrong. If you ask 12 people and average their answer, they will be remarkably close. A jury works on the same principle. Twelve different brains, with twelve different life experiences, will filter out each other's blind spots and get closer to the truth than one brain alone.
The Burden
Being on a jury is annoying. You miss work; you have to sit in a boring room. But it is the price of freedom. If we want a fair system for ourselves, we have to give our time to ensure it exists for others. It is one of the few times the government asks you for your 'time' instead of your 'money'.

The Trap of Wheat: Agriculture, Kings & Markets

Ten thousand years ago, humanity made a deal that changed everything: we started planting seeds. Children discover how agriculture trapped us into cities and kings — and how the invisible hand of the market started moving goods without a master planner.

Unit 1 The Trap of Wheat: Agriculture Core8 questions

For 200,000 years, humans lived freely as hunter-gatherers. Then, about 10,000 years ago, we made a deal that changed the world forever: we started planting seeds. The Domestication Deal
We usually say that humans domesticated wheat, but you could argue that wheat domesticated humans. Before farming, we wandered freely. After farming, we were stuck in one place, forced to clear rocks, carry water, and guard the fields from morning until night. The plant got us to spread its DNA across the entire globe, and in exchange, we got backaches, cavities, and a life of endless labor.
The Magic of Surplus
If farming was so hard, why did we do it? Because of 'Surplus.' For the first time, a family could grow more food than they could eat in a day. They could store it in a silo. This extra food meant that not everyone had to be a farmer. You could feed a soldier, a priest, or an inventor. This surplus is the battery that powers all of civilization. Without the silo, there is no science.
The Birth of Inequality
In the hunter-gatherer days, you couldn't be rich because you couldn't carry extra stuff. But once you have a barn full of wheat, someone can steal it, and someone else can own it. This created the first hierarchy: the people who owned the surplus and the people who worked for it. Agriculture created the massive populations we have today, but it also invented poverty, war over land, and the gap between the rich and the poor.

The deal changed from 'I will protect you' to 'I will protect you... from me.' The bodyguard became the King.
The Pyramid Shape
Every ancient society looks like a pyramid. One person at the top, a few nobles below them, and thousands of workers at the bottom. This isn't an accident; it is the most efficient way to manage a surplus. The King organizes the labor (building irrigation, walls, temples) and collects the taxes (grain). It is unfair, but it is powerful. Pyramids can build things that flat tribes never could.
The Story of God
How do you get 10,000 people to obey one man? You can't fight them all. Instead, you tell a story. Kings quickly realized that swords were not enough; they needed permission to rule. They claimed to be chosen by the Gods (or to be Gods themselves). If disobeying the King means disobeying the creator of the universe, rebellion becomes terrifying. Religion became the glue that held the hierarchy together.

The Signal
We think of prices as just 'what things cost,' but they are actually information signals. A high price is a flare gun shooting into the sky, telling the world, 'This thing is scarce! Make more of it!' If the price of apples goes up, farmers notice and plant more apple trees to make money. The price creates the behavior. It acts as a global text message that tells producers exactly what society needs, without anyone giving an order. Economist Adam Smith called this invisible coordination the 'invisible hand.'
The Pencil Miracle
Pick up a simple yellow pencil. Here is a shocking truth: there is not a single person on Earth who knows how to make one. The wood comes from Oregon, the graphite from Sri Lanka, the rubber from Brazil, and the metal from China. Thousands of people who don't speak the same language and hate each other worked together to make it. Markets allow strangers to cooperate. You don't have to love the logger to buy his wood; you just have to pay him.
Specialization
Imagine trying to make your own shoes, grow your own food, and build your own house. You would be terrible at all of them, and you would be poor. Markets allow us to 'Specialize.' You get really good at one thing (like coding or baking), and you trade that skill for everything else. This 'Division of Labor' is the secret engine of wealth. Ten people working alone make very little; ten people working together as a team can build a rocket.

Unit 1 The Ledger (Debt & Money) Core8 questions

Frozen Trust
If you help your neighbor build a barn, he owes you a favor. But memories fade. So, humans invented a token to represent that favor. Whether it is a sea shell, a gold coin, or a digital number, money is just a 'claim check' on society. It is not valuable in itself; it is valuable because it proves you did something useful and are owed something in return.
Time Travel (Debt)
Debt is often seen as a trap, but it is also a superpower. It allows you to pull value from your future self to use today. If you borrow money to build a factory, you are using future profits to pay for present bricks. This 'financial time travel' is what allowed humans to build civilization faster than we could save for it. It is dangerous, like fire, but essential.
The Tinkerbell Effect
Today, our money is 'Fiat'—it is not backed by gold. It is backed by belief. Like Tinkerbell, it only exists because we clap our hands and believe in it. If everyone stopped trusting the Dollar or the Euro tomorrow, they would instantly become worthless paper. The global economy is a massive, shared act of imagination.
Unit 2 The Silk Road 9 questions

Long before the internet, there was the Silk Road. It was a network of trade routes connecting China, India, the Middle East, and Europe. We focus on it not just for the silk, but for the 'software' that traveled on the camels: algebra, gunpowder, paper, and religion. This unit explores how trade is the physical nervous system of the human species, allowing ideas to spread from brain to brain across continents.

The Internet of Antiquity
If you wanted to send an idea from Rome to Beijing in the year 100, you didn't use fiber optics; you used a caravan. The Silk Road was slow, but it was effective. It allowed inventions like paper (from China) and glass (from Rome) to swap places. Without this connection, human progress would have been stuck in isolated pockets. It was the first time the 'world brain' connected.
More Than Goods
Merchants didn't just carry products; they carried stories. Buddhism traveled from India to China on these roads. Islam spread to Africa. Even the plague (The Black Death) used the Silk Road as a highway. It proves that once humans connect, we share everything—the good, the bad, and the microscopic. Trade routes are contagion routes for both ideas and germs.
The Middlemen
Very few people traveled the whole road. It was a relay race. Goods changed hands dozens of times, gaining value with every mile. This created rich cities in the middle (like Samarkand) and proved that 'connecting' people is often more profitable than 'making' things. The middleman is the router of the human network.
Unit 3 The Tulip Mania 9 questions

We think we are rational with money, but history shows we are easily infected by 'financial viruses.' In the 1630s, the Dutch went crazy for tulip bulbs. At the height of the mania, a single flower root cost as much as a mansion. Then, overnight, the price crashed to zero. This unit uses the story of the first major economic 'bubble' to teach the difference between 'Price' (what you pay) and 'Value' (what it is actually worth).

The Bubble
A 'bubble' happens when people buy something just because they think they can sell it to someone else for more money tomorrow. It has nothing to do with the object itself. In Holland, people stopped looking at the flower and started looking only at the price graph. When the graph is the only thing that matters, reality has left the building.
The Greater Fool
Bubbles rely on the 'Greater Fool Theory.' You buy an overpriced tulip because you hope to find a 'greater fool' to buy it from you for even more. But eventually, you run out of fools. When the last fool buys, the music stops. The crash of the tulip market destroyed fortunes in days, proving that collective belief is fragile.
Price vs. Value
This event taught the world a permanent lesson: Price is not Value. A tulip might be priced at $50,000, but its value is just a pretty flower that dies in a week. Learning to see the difference—to ask 'what is this actually worth?' rather than 'what does it cost?'—is the most important skill in financial literacy.
Unit 4 The Fourth Estate (Information) Core9 questions

Democracy is a decision-making machine. But a machine is only as good as its data. If you feed a computer garbage, it outputs garbage. This unit explores the role of the Media—often called the 'Fourth Estate.' The Sensor Network
Imagine if your body couldn't feel pain. You would touch a hot stove and burn your hand because your brain never got the message. Journalists act as society's nerves. When they report on corruption or failure, it is like a pain signal sent to the voters. It hurts to hear bad news, but that pain is necessary information. Without these sensors, the government acts blindly, and the society gets burned.
The Flashlight
Power naturally tries to hide. Rulers, corporations, and officials often prefer to work in the shadows where no one is watching. The job of the Fourth Estate is to shine a flashlight into those dark corners. We do not protect the press because we like journalists; we protect them because they are the only ones holding the flashlight. Without them, democracy dies in the dark.
Signal vs. Noise
Today, we do not have a lack of information; we have too much. We are drowning in 'noise'—rumors, propaganda, and clickbait. Democracy requires us to be filters. We must learn to distinguish the 'signal' (verified facts) from the 'noise' (emotional outrage). If we vote based on noise, the system crashes. Truth is the only software that runs a free society.

Imagine a smoke detector screaming at 3:00 AM. It is annoying, loud, and disruptive. But is the machine 'bad'? No. It is doing its job: alerting you to a fire. Human behavior is the same. A tantrum, a fight, or a shut-down is often just a loud signal that something is wrong inside. If you just punish the noise (taking the batteries out), you miss the fire burning in the kitchen.
Biological Glitches (H.A.L.T.)
Before you judge someone's character, check their tank. The most common causes of aggression are purely biological. We use the acronym H.A.L.T.: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. When your brain is low on glucose (sugar) or sleep, your Prefrontal Cortex (the part that controls impulses) shuts down. You aren't being 'mean'; you are chemically running on empty. This isn't an excuse, but it is an explanation.
The Iceberg
What you see people do is just the tip of the iceberg. The punch, the insult, or the theft is the 10% visible above the water. The 90% hidden below is the 'Antecedent': the fight they had with their dad that morning, the toothache they can't describe, or the fear of failing a test. To fix the behavior, you have to dive underwater and fix the cause, not just chop off the tip of the ice.

When someone hurts you, the oldest instinct in the human brain is to hurt them back. We call this 'Revenge,' or in legal terms, 'Retribution.' It feels good for a moment, but it rarely solves the problem. In this unit, we explore a newer, harder idea: 'Restorative Justice.' Crime as a Wound

The Birthday Cake Rule
You already know the simplest version of the Veil of Ignorance. It is the rule for cutting a birthday cake: 'One person cuts, the other person chooses.' If you cut the cake but don't know which slice you will get, you will cut it perfectly evenly. You are forced to be fair because you are afraid of getting the small piece. Fairness isn't about being nice; it is about designing a system where selfishness produces equality.
The Lottery of Birth
Imagine you are about to be born, but you don't know if you will be a billionaire in New York or a starving orphan in a war zone. You don't know your gender, your race, or your IQ. From behind this 'Veil of Ignorance,' what kind of world would you design? You would probably make sure the orphan has food and safety, just in case that orphan turns out to be you. This fear creates justice.
Designing the Future
We can use this tool to solve modern arguments. Should healthcare be expensive? Imagine you don't know if you will have cancer or be an athlete. You would likely vote for affordable care. Should schools be funded by local taxes? Imagine you don't know if you will be born in a rich neighborhood or a poor one. You would vote for equal funding. The Veil forces us to care about the unlucky, because the unlucky person might be us.
Unit 4 Nelson Mandela 9 questions

History is full of leaders who won power and then punished their enemies. Nelson Mandela is a rare exception. After spending 27 years in prison, he became President of South Africa and chose 'Reconciliation' instead of revenge. Truth and Reconciliation
Mandela didn't just pretend the past didn't happen. He created a court called the 'Truth and Reconciliation Commission.' The rule was simple: If you told the full truth about your crimes, you could be granted amnesty. Unit 1 The Prisoner's Dilemma 9 questions

Why is it so hard to trust people? Mathematics has an answer. The 'Prisoner's Dilemma' is a famous game theory puzzle that shows why two rational people might betray each other, even when cooperating would be better for both. This unit explores the math of trust and explains why we need contracts, reputations, and laws to help us make the cooperative move.

The Trap of Self-Interest
If everyone acts selfishly, everyone loses. We end up in the 'Both Betray' box (5 years in jail). This explains why we have things like pollution (it's cheaper for me to pollute, but bad if everyone does it). To escape the trap, we need 'external enforcers' like laws or social shame to change the math.
The Game
Imagine you and a partner are arrested. If you both stay silent, you both get 1 year in jail. If you betray him (and he stays silent), you go free and he gets 10 years. But if you both betray each other, you both get 5 years. The math says 'Betray' is the safer individual move, but 'Silence' (cooperation) is the best group move. This tension is the story of human society.
The Iterated Game
The game changes if you play it more than once. If you betray me today, I will betray you tomorrow. Because humans live in tribes and see each other every day, we learned to cooperate. We realized that being nice is not just moral; it is the best long-term mathematical strategy. Reputation is simply a record of how you played the game last time.
Unit 2 The Island: Society Simulation 8 questions

Theory is easy; reality is hard. It is easy to say 'we should share everything' until you are the one who caught the fish. In this practice unit, we play 'The Island.' You and 100 strangers are shipwrecked on a deserted island. There are no police, no shops, and no rules. You have to build a society from scratch. Day One: Chaos

This doesn't mean being a dictator; it means creating a single source of truth. You need a conch shell, a whistle, or a rock—something that says, 'When I hold this, you listen.' Without this focus, the group is just a mob.
The Coconut Currency
By Day Three, bartering gets annoying. 'I have a coconut, but I want shoes, and the guy with shoes doesn't like coconuts.' You need a medium of exchange. You pick seashells. Suddenly, trade explodes. The shoe guy sells his shoes for shells, then uses the shells to buy your coconut. You didn't just invent money; you invented efficiency. But be careful—if you wash up too many shells (inflation), they become worthless.
The Thief
On Day Seven, someone steals the water supply. Now you face the ultimate test of justice. Do you beat him up? (Revenge). Do you banish him to the jungle? (Exile). Or do you make him refill the barrels for a week? (Restorative Justice). Your decision sets the 'Precedent.' Whatever you do to him today, you must be willing to do to everyone else tomorrow. You are writing the constitution in real-time.
Unit 3 The Pothole 9 questions

Civics often feels boring because it is abstract. To make it real, we follow the life of a single pothole. If you hit a hole in the road, who fixes it? The President? The Army? No. This unit traces the boring but miraculous journey of a citizen complaint as it travels through local government, turns into a work order, and eventually becomes a patch of fresh asphalt. It reveals the invisible machinery that keeps civilization running.

The Complaint
The process starts with you. In a democracy, the government is not psychic; it relies on 'User Reports.' When you call 311 or use an app to report a pothole, you are effectively sending a 'bug report' to the system administrators. Without this feedback loop, the government cannot know where the problems are. You are part of the sensor network of the city.
The Budget Meeting
Fixing the hole costs money. That money comes from the taxes we discussed earlier. But a city has limited funds. They must decide: do we fix the pothole on Main Street or repair the sidewalk near the school? This boring meeting where people argue over spreadsheets is actually where the moral priorities of the community are decided. A budget is a moral document.
The Fix
Finally, a truck arrives. This is the moment where the abstract 'Government' becomes a physical reality. A team of workers uses chemistry (hot asphalt) and physics (steamrollers) to repair the shared surface. The pothole is gone, not because of magic, but because of a chain of cooperation involving citizens, bureaucrats, and workers.
